When should homeowners be alert to the danger of freezing pipes? states that nearly all Americans, regardless of where they live, are likely to face some type of severe winter weather at some point in their lives. Just think back to last year and the two winter storms that literally shut down Atlanta, GA. That steamy southern city didn't expect such harsh winter weather, and this year may bring more of the same.

The 2015 edition of the Farmers' Almanac, predicts about three-quarters of the nation will see below-normal temperatures for the winter of 2014-15.

According to a recent article on, in southern states and other areas where freezing weather is the exception rather than the rule (and where houses often do not provide adequate pipe insulation or protection), the temperature alert threshold is 20°F.

In northern states where winter weather is harsher, longer and houses are built to sustain lower temperatures (and pipes are often insulated), it has less to do with outside temperature and more to do with cracks or openings that allow cold air to come in contact with pipes that lead to freezing and bursting.

  • Call a Professional. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) provides a specific set of standards for fixing water damage. According to the IICRC S500, water damage repair should only be done by experienced and trained technicians that will promptly and professionally fix water damage from a house flood according to IICRC standards.
  • Move Valuables. Carefully move valuables, knick-knacks sitting on the furniture, and any other contents in the affected areas to unaffected rooms.
