What is Mold?
Mold is a term that describes fungi that grow in the form of multicellular, thread-like structures called hyphae.
While some mold is used in food production and medicines, it’s also in your home. It’s at your office, and it’s outside. It’s just about everywhere (except where it’s very cold). But don’t be alarmed.
Mold helps to break down dead plants and animals, and it is a natural part of our ecosystem. Mold is also found in damp building material where it often appears like stains and comes in a variety of colors. Musty smells may indicate microbial (mold) growth even when there are no visible signs. If you allow mold to grow in homes or offices, it can lead to poor indoor air quality.
To grow, mold needs moisture (water). Sources could be plumbing leaks, faulty appliances (like washing machines, dish washers, and ice makers), heating and cooling systems, or it could come from outside (rain or flooding). Poor ventilation can also contribute to higher humidity and lead to condensation – this also allows mold growth.

Why Clean Up Mold?
Mold releases small “spores” into the air. Most are so small, you can’t see them. So, when excessive mold grows indoors, the number of mold spores and fragments is usually higher indoors than outdoors. This can lead to respiratory and other health issues.
Mold spores are small enough that people can actually inhale them deep into the lungs. The effects vary from person to person, but they could lead to headaches, nausea, and general feelings of discomfort. Typically, the elderly, infants, or others with compromised immune systems experience other adverse health effects.
