The bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house. Thanks to the warm and humid conditions present there, it's also one of the ideal places for mold growth! Failing to treat mold can lead to rashes, causes respiratory issues, exacerbate allergies, permanently stain sealant and grout, and just become an eyesore.

Fortunately, there are plenty of strategies and products you can use to remove mold from the tiles of your shower and prevent new growth. You can either opt for natural cleaning or store-bought solutions to keep the mold situation under control. In this article, we discuss ways to remove mold from shower areas and other parts of your bathroom.

How to Remove Mold from Shower?

When using any cleaning product to remove mold from the tiles of your shower, you need to wear gloves and make sure you work in a well-ventilated area. We also recommend you wear a mask as cleaning mold can lead to the release of mold spores into the air.

1.      Use Borax

Borax is a white mineral powder and works as a natural method to remove mold in the shower. All you have to do is mix one cup of borax with one gallon of hot water. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray directly onto the surface you have to clean. Use a clean rag, scrub brush, or sponge to get rid of mold stains. You can use the remaining borax to mop the shower floor.

2.      Work with Bleach

Bleach is another great product to remove mold from the tile surfaces of your shower. However, make sure to use bleach only in a well-ventilated area. For instance, you can open a window or switch on your bathroom fan when working with bleach. A 10:1 water to bleach solution is effective on nonporous surfaces such as tubs, sinks, showers, and toilets. However, you should not use it to clean mold from the walls or ceilings.

3.      Clean With Distilled White Vinegar

Distilled white vinegar is an effective solution to clean mold from the shower. You can dilute it to clean the shower tiles or use it directly on the showerhead. Remember that even though vinegar is an excellent way to remove mold, keep in mind that undiluted white vinegar might have a very unpleasant odor.

Spray vinegar directly on the affected area and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes, and then wipe it away using a rag or sponge. For tough-to-clean areas, scrub the mold using a clean bristle brush.

4.      Use Baking Soda

Mix baking soda with some water to make a paste. Apply it to the mold and allow it to sit for ten minutes. Then use a brush to scrub off the paste.

5.      Remove Mold Using a Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Another excellent product you can use to remove mold from the shower is a regular toilet bowl cleaner. Simply pour the toilet bowl cleaner on the area where mold is growing and put a paper towel on it to keep it in place. Allow the cleaner to sit for an hour or even overnight. Extremely tough stains are going to take longer to remove. You can always reapply the solution as well.

How to Prevent Mold in the Shower

Once you have removed mold from the shower, you need to take steps to prevent it from happening again.

1.      Keep the Shower Area Dry

Try your best to keep your bathroom properly ventilated by switching on an exhaust fan during and after several minutes of each bath or shower, and leave the bathroom door open whenever possible.

Dry the bathmats and washcloths, and launder towels frequently as well. For additional protection, you can even use a squeegee over the glass and tile surfaces and dry the sinks to remove water.

2.      Install a Shower Curtain

Make sure to draw the shower curtain every time you take a shower. These days, you can get decorative fabric shower curtains paired with a disposable plastic liner. This means you don't have to replace the nice-looking curtains when they get dirty.

No matter what your preferences are, make sure you tuck the curtain into the bathtub tightly when the water is running. Doing this can do wonders for keeping water off your bathroom floor. Bear in mind that you can launder moldy shower curtains. However, if you notice mold growth, you should replace the curtains.

3.      Repair All the Leaks

Shower mold doesn't just come from the water in your bath or shower. Leaks can even cause accumulation of moisture which consequently results in mold growth.

Whenever you notice a drip or leak, don't ignore it and repair it immediately if you can. If you are unable to fix the leak, you should call a plumber. Remember that it's a lot more difficult to remove mold than it is to prevent it in the first place.

4.      Dry Out the Shower Items

Removing sponges, product bottles, and loofahs from the shower when not in use is going to help keep mold away. When you keep these items in the shower after use, water ends up accumulating under them as they dry and makes them the ideal breeding ground for mildew and mold.

5.      Reseal the Grout

If you have tiles in your shower area, you can reseal the grout every 10 to 12 months or so to prevent the moisture from seeping into hairline cracks. Cracks create an entryway for moisture to seep into, creating the perfect environment for mold growth. Thus, it is extremely beneficial to keep the grout in shape.
