How to tell if your ductwork is the source of your symptoms
This is where honest self-diagnosis matters. Ductwork gets blamed for symptoms that trace back to other sources — bedding, pets, the outdoor pollen that arrives on your clothes, or a mold problem in a room with no HVAC connection at all. A few patterns genuinely point at the system.
Symptoms that follow the AC cycle
If congestion, coughing, or eye irritation begins within a few minutes of the AC turning on and eases when it turns off, the system is a likely contributor. This is far more diagnostic than symptoms that simply get worse over the course of a day.
A musty smell from the vents
A distinct earthy or basement-like smell coming out of supply registers at start-up suggests biological growth somewhere in the system — usually the coil, the drain pan, or an interior duct surface.
Visible dust plumes from the vents
Puffs of dust when the system kicks on after being off for a while indicate substantial accumulation. A small amount is normal. Visible clouds are not.
Discolored or fuzzy patches around supply registers
Dark staining or visible growth on the ceiling paint or the grille itself points to condensation at that vent — and possibly mold. In South Florida this is frequently a diffuser running below the room dew point because the supply air is too cold, the boot is uninsulated, or the register is starved for airflow.
Symptoms clustered in one room served by a specific vent
If one bedroom triggers symptoms and adjacent rooms do not, and the difference is which duct branch serves it, that branch is worth investigating.

The classic "the house is the source" pattern. On its own it does not identify the HVAC specifically, but combined with any signal above, it strengthens the case considerably.

Understanding MERV ratings
MERV — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — rates how well a filter captures particles across defined size ranges. ASHRAE Standard 52.2 defines MERV 1 through 16. Ratings written as "MERV 17 to 20" come from an extended classification used to describe HEPA and ULPA media and are not part of the ASHRAE 52.2 scale. The airflow problem with high-MERV filters
Higher MERV means denser media, which means more resistance to airflow. Residential HVAC systems are designed around a specific external static pressure, and the filter is a large share of it. Push past that spec and the system loses capacity, the coil can freeze, and the blower motor works harder than it was designed to. Most residential systems can carry MERV 11, and many can carry MERV 13, without modification. Anything higher generally requires a purpose-built filter housing with more media area.
The practical test is not the label on the filter — it is static pressure measured at the air handler. Any competent HVAC contractor can take that reading in a few minutes. If your total external static pressure is already at or above the equipment rating (commonly 0.5 in. w.c. on residential air handlers), a MERV upgrade will make things worse, not better.
HEPA works — but not the way most people think
True HEPA is standard in standalone room air purifiers, which have their own dedicated fans sized for that resistance. Forcing true HEPA into an existing HVAC filter slot without modification hurts system performance more than it helps air quality. A properly sized portable HEPA purifier in the bedroom is usually the more effective and cheaper intervention — and it is the one we most often recommend to homeowners who are about to spend four figures on the wrong thing.
Replacement schedule for Florida
In this climate, with high humidity and near-continuous AC use, a MERV 11 or 13 pleated filter should be changed:

The EPA position on residential duct cleaning is more cautious than most industry marketing suggests. That verification step is the one homeowners never ask about, and it is the one that separates real work from theater. ACR 2025 defines specific verification methods, including a visual Surface Comparison Test and the NADCA Vacuum Test, which measures the residue actually left on the duct surface after cleaning. Ask for it in writing before you pay. A contractor who cannot tell you how cleanliness will be verified is telling you something.
The full process on a typical 2,000 sq ft home takes 3 to 5 hours. Prices in Broward County generally run $400 to $1,000 for residential jobs, depending on system size, the number of returns, and access.
Companies advertising "$99 duct cleaning specials" are almost never doing NADCA-standard work. What they usually do is vacuum the register grilles and spray a deodorant.
