We have all heard the old adage of what April rains bring in May. However, less widely known is the much less pleasant side of Spring showers…mold. Mold can often be a troublesome side effect of wetter and warmer weather. As most people know, mold regularly appears whenever moisture is present in your home. There can be many causes of moisture, like hanging up wet clothes to dry in a small room, living near a large body of water, or condensation on cold surfaces in your home. One of the greatest culprits though is humidity and rain. Moisture in the air is mold’s best friend.

So, what can you do to keep mold at bay this coming Spring? Follow these easy tips and tricks and to help keep your home and family safe from mold this Spring and beyond.

  • Air Flow – Use fans as often as possible. Turn on the exhaust fan in your kitchen when cooking on the stove, leave your bathroom fan on during and 20 minutes after showering, and use large fans in spaces like living rooms, bedrooms, and basements so moisture never clings to windows, walls, and surfaces.

  • Secure Leaks – Puddles don’t only form on sidewalks. Make sure to seal any leaks BEFORE rainy season begins, to ensure a dry and moisture free environment. After many months of strong winter winds, your roof may have excessive damage. Be sure to repair any missing shingles or impacted gutters so the rainwater flows away from your home and not into your attic or foundation.

  • Keep Everything Dry –Avoid leaving wet towels or clothes on carpets or near walls and never leave damp clothes in a washing machine. If there isn’t any moisture in your home there isn’t anything for mold to hold onto.

  • Purify Your Air – Purifying the air in your home is an excellent place to start. There are many air purifiers that are targeted specifically for trapping and destroying mold spores. Some are even designed to block mold spores from entering your home.
