Summer Prep Steps That Protect Your Home When Weather Turns

Summer has its good side. Long evenings, warmer days, and more time outside. But anyone who has owned a home for a while knows that the season can also bring some of the worst weather. Thunderstorms, wind gusts, and flash flooding often hit fast and leave a mess behind.

Most of the time, damage doesn't happen because of some enormous disaster. It's often a few overlooked problems that add up. The good news is, a bit of maintenance ahead of time can make a real difference.

Start With Roofs and Gutters

You don't need to climb up on the roof yourself, but it's worth taking a close look from the ground or using binoculars to inspect it. Are there shingles missing or lifting? Are there any areas that appear saggy or misaligned? Water finds weak points fast, and once it gets in, it spreads through insulation, drywall, or ceilings.

As for gutters, they're easy to forget until they overflow. When they're packed with leaves or dirt, water spills down where it's not supposed to go, including into the attic. Water that collects near the foundation can cause cracking or basement leaks over time. A basic cleaning goes a long way.

Manage Drainage Around the Foundation

After the next rain, take a lap around the house. If you spot puddles forming near the base of the house, that's something to deal with. The soil should slope away so water flows out and away, not toward the walls. You might need to regrade a section or install a small drain.

While you're at it, check nearby trees. Dead limbs or overhanging branches are a problem waiting to happen. The wind snaps them off, and they come crashing down hard. We've seen broken windows, crushed gutters, and even roof holes caused by limbs that could have been trimmed earlier.

Check Sump Pumps and Backup Systems

If you have a sump pump, test it before the next storm, not after. Fill the pit with a bucket of water and see if it kicks on and drains properly. It can be the thing that keeps your basement dry when everyone else's is flooding.

Professional Help Makes Recovery Easier

Sometimes, even with all the prep work in the world, storms still win. If water gets inside, time is of the essence. Wet drywall, soaked flooring, and trapped moisture behind baseboards or inside crawlspaces all become bigger problems the longer they sit.

That's when calling AdvantaClean makes sense. We handle water removal, complete drying, and inspection for hidden moisture. Our crews are trained to identify what most people miss and address it before it becomes a serious repair.
